FIREFIGHTER
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
An
employee in this class performs public safety work in the protection of lives
and property through controlling, preventing and extinguishing fires,
maintaining a state of preparedness and keeping equipment and apparatus for
fire control in sound operating condition.
Work is performed under immediate supervision.
EXAMPLES OF TASKS PERFORMED
Responds
to fire alarms as a member of a fire company, lays hose, connects nozzles,
directs water streams, climbs ladders, operates pumps; removes persons from
danger; administers first aid.
Participates
in training programs; checks and services equipment; participates in fire
safety inspections and public education activities; participates in maintaining
operating records.
Assists
in maintenance of fire station, equipment and apparatus; maintains personal
equipment in state of readiness.
DESIRABLE PREPARATION FOR APPOINTMENT
Graduation
from high school or equivalent. Must be
between the ages of 21 and 45 inclusive.
SELECTION GUIDELINES
Oral
and written tests prepared for this position class; test of physical agility,
health and character as established by the department in cooperation with the Human
Resources Department.
Notice: This classification is a
“safety sensitive” position as defined by the United States Department of
Transportation drug and alcohol testing regulations, the Oklahoma Standards for
Workplace Drug and Alcohol Testing Act and/or the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana
laws. As a “safety sensitive”
classification, the employee will be subject to drug and alcohol
testing including random testing.
Marijuana is one of the substances included in the drug panel
screening. Possession of a medical
marijuana license will not excuse the employee from the testing process
or the consequences of testing positive for marijuana.
STARTING
PAY: $43,592.64/yr. Excellent employee benefits (insurance,
vacation leave, sick leave, retirement).
WORK
HOURS: 24 hours on duty/48 hours off duty.
